the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. (Luke 3:38)
It is fascinating that Adam is considered the son of God in the genealogy in Luke 3. This clues us in to what it means to be a son of God (note: lowercase ‘son’ here. Jesus is the only divine Son of God. The only begotten of the father as in John 3:16). To be a son of God means that you are formed by God. God creates you, specially without the need of an earthly father.
This is true of Adam and the same is true of Jesus in His humanity. He has no earthly Father (in the flesh) but rather God formed Him directly so to speak, as with Adam.
So Jesus is called a second Adam. This is a story that reminds us of the beginning of mankind. One who has no earthly Father, is directly formed by God. God takes the dust of Mary’s womb and forms Jesus. (For Mary is dust though wonderfully made. Psalm 103:14 – For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.)
And now the Adamic story unfolds. The temptations come from the serpent (Luke 4). Yet this new Adam is victorious. Further, rather than abandon His bride before God, as Adam did the woman, this new Adam offers Himself as a sacrifice for His bride.
All died through the first Adam, now all live through Christ, the new Adam. The first Adam was earthly, the new Adam is a life giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45).
Now because of the work of the new Adam we can all be called sons of God. And we receive what all the sons of God have, what both Adam and our Lord in His incarnation had. This direct creation by God. If any man is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has passed away, behold the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). But God forms us not from dust again, rather we will be given spiritual bodies (1 Corinthians 15:46).
