The Lord could have made a Spirit inspired statue or painting of Himself when He came to earth. Similar to the tabernacle, He could have had men carve out a physical image of Himself. So all of us up to the modern time would know exactly what He looked like. But He chose not to do so.
Many of us are curious to see our Lord though He is not here on earth. And we may think, a picture is what we need. Yet that is not how our Lord has chosen to make images of Himself for us to see. We have no such images of Jesus.
Rather He makes more wonderful images. He does not make an image of dust and leave it lifeless. Instead He takes men who are like clay in the hands of a potter, yet with a spirit of life; He takes such men and turns them into His works of art. These are the kinds of images the Lord Jesus leaves us of Himself as we wait to see Him face to face.
He leaves us His church, who He is transforming to be more like Himself.
2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
