I’ve recently been very interested in the peculiarities of Genesis 1 and its revelation of how God created the world.
1. The earth was created before light was created.
2. The earth was once just dark waters.
3. The earth is central to creation. All of the physical world is created in relation to the earth. The purposes of the sun for example is entirely to light the earth.
4. At first there was seemingly no “outer space”. Just the waters of earth and day and night. Then God creates the expanse which he calls heaven. So the sky + space come after the earth.
And here in Genesis 1:6–7 we read:
[6] And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” [7] And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. (ESV)
5. The expanse of heaven is seemingly all of the visible heavens, that is sky and space. And waters are said to be below and above the expanse. This seems to indicate that after the edge of the universe there is water.
These are quite fascinating insights into the world we live in. For one our culture typically sees the earth as just a random blip in a massive universe. When in actuality the earth is the focal point. These things also in part push against modern theories about the origin of the universe. Here we see the void earth was there before light, and then light came. Then an expansion happened which created the heavens (sky + space), and the sun, moon and stars came after.
